Turning Disadvantage into Advantage

This saying is a military principle put forward by the ancient strategist Sun Tzu in The Art of War. It points out that a commander should make an accurate and comprehensive assessment of the deployment of their own and the enemy forces, and not allow temporary setbacks or hardships to disturb their minds. They should cleverly make use of unfavorable factors or situations to deceive the enemy, thereby turning them into a favorable condition for themselves and gaining the initiative. Such a military strategy is also applied in social aspects where competition exists.

When two armies compete for victory, the most challenging task is to transform a winding path into a straight one, or turn disadvantage into advantage. Therefore, commanders should use advantageous tactics to lure and distract the enemy, move behind them but take a shortcut to reach the battlefield first. This is the way to turn a twisting road into a straight one. (The Art of War)
